Naturopathic Medicine

Naturopathic doctors are trained in all of the basic medical sciences as well as alternative therapeutics. They attend one of the four accredited naturopathic colleges in the United States. In Colorado we have come a long way with licensure but we are currently considered "registered NDs" and we must use that terminology. Our focus is on health-care rather than disease-care. We do not simply give "natural drugs" in place of pharmaceuticals. There is an art and a philosophy to what we do and how we do it.

Our philosophy is based on:

  • THE HEALING POWER OF NATURE in that we believe the body has an innate ability to heal itself; sometimes we just have to get out of the way!

  • TREAT THE CAUSE of the problem rather than treating or suppressing the symptoms. We must first remove the obstacle(s) to cure in order to really heal.

  • DO NO HARM by using the least force intervention first and then moving on to more interventions according to our therapeutic order.

  • DOCTOR AS TEACHER. The word “doctor” comes from the latin word docere, which means teacher. It is my job to educate and teach self-care in a way that promotes lifelong effects on wellness.

  • TREAT THE WHOLE PERSON. Each of our organ systems runs smoothly with the help of all the other systems. It is impossible to treat, for example, the skin without also thinking about the digestive system. Separating and treating each system individually is simply not effective. In addition to a body, we are also comprised of a mind and a spirit. Each of these cannot be separated from the other and they are all equally important.

  • PREVENTION. It is crucial and much easier to do what we can to stay healthy instead of waiting until our bodies begin to show signs of dis-ease. In order to create the conditions for health we must breathe fresh air, drink clean water, eat nutritious foods, move our bodies, sleep well, have nurturing relationships, etc. I work with each person and create an individualized plan to help return to an optimal state of health.
